Vaginal infections include bacterial vaginosis (BV), caused by an imbalance of vaginal bacteria, and trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted parasitic infection. Both require specific antibiotic or antiparasitic treatment and can increase susceptibility to other STDs.
Most vaginal infections clear within 5 to 7 days of completing prescribed treatment. BV has a relatively high recurrence rate; recurring cases may require longer or maintenance treatment. Partner treatment is necessary for trichomoniasis to prevent reinfection.
