Common symptoms
Often asymptomatic
Most people with chlamydia have no symptoms, which is why screening is essential
Unusual discharge
Abnormal discharge from the penis or vagina
Burning urination
Pain or burning sensation when urinating
Pelvic pain
Pain in the lower abdomen, particularly in women
Rectal symptoms
Pain, discharge, or bleeding in the rectal area if infection is in the rectum
Chlamydia is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and is spread through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Because it is usually asymptomatic, it is often unknowingly transmitted. Untreated chlamydia in women can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility.
After completing a course of antibiotics, symptoms resolve and the infection is cleared. Retesting is recommended 3 months after treatment due to the high rate of reinfection.
