Spreading area of red, inflamed skin at or around the infected site
Warmth
The affected area feels noticeably warm to the touch
Swelling
Puffiness or raised area of skin at the infection site
Pain or tenderness
Soreness or sensitivity at and around the infected area
Pus or discharge
Yellow or green fluid draining from the skin, indicating bacterial infection
Skin infections occur when bacteria penetrate the skin through a cut, wound, insect bite, or hair follicle. Cellulitis affects deeper layers of skin, while impetigo and folliculitis are more superficial. Early treatment prevents the infection from spreading.
With appropriate antibiotic therapy, most mild skin infections begin to improve within 48 to 72 hours. The area of redness should stop expanding and begin to shrink. Warm compresses help promote drainage in localized infections.
Full resolution of the infection typically takes 7 to 14 days. The skin may appear discolored or slightly scarred after healing, which often fades over time.
